Start with what the evidence supports. Portable HEPA air cleaners reduce airborne particulate; that much is not in dispute and is measurable. Whether that translates into you feeling better is a more careful claim, and the EPA states it carefully: multiple studies with portable HEPA air cleaners have found improvements in one or more allergy and asthma symptoms, but the studies do not always show major improvements and they do not show improvements in all symptoms. We report that hedge as written. A site selling you a filter has an obvious incentive to round it up into "clinically proven relief", and rounding it up would be a lie.

The same source gives the priority order that actually helps, and it is worth repeating precisely because it argues against our own commercial interest: the most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air, and filtration does not replace the need to do those things. Wash the bedding in hot water. Keep the animal off the bed. Fix the damp. Then buy the machine.

The ozone problem is real, common, and almost nobody flags it. Many air cleaners sold for allergies include an ionizer, a plasma stage, an electrostatic precipitator or a UV lamp. The EPA's position is direct: avoid portable air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, because ozone is a lung irritant — and it names electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, UV lights without adequate lamp coatings, and plasma air cleaners as technologies that may emit it.

Here is what makes that concrete rather than abstract. EPA's ENERGY STAR database publishes a measured ozone emission figure for every certified unit, in parts per billion. Across the machines we cover, those readings run from 0.00 ppb on several straightforward fan-and-filter units to 5 ppb on one popular ionizing model. All of those are far below the 50 ppb program limit and none is dangerous by that standard. But if you are buying a machine specifically because someone in the house has asthma, the difference between zero and five is information you are entitled to have before you buy, and it is published, and we print it on every card.

Of the competing roundups we looked at while researching this site, several recommend a plasma-equipped unit as their top pick for asthma sufferers without discussing ozone at all. That is the gap this section exists to fill.

Mold, dust and the limits of filtration. A purifier captures airborne mold spores. It does not touch the mold, which is growing on a surface because that surface is wet, and it will keep producing spores until the moisture is dealt with. We have a page on mold because the search volume is real and the buying advice is real, but the honest headline is that a purifier is the second thing you do, not the first. Household dust is a better fit for filtration — it is genuinely airborne, genuinely reduced by air movement through a filter, and genuinely responsive to a well-sized machine.

Particle size is the concept that unlocks the rest. Pollen is large and easy. Dust mite allergen is smaller. Cat allergen spans a wide range and the small fraction is the stubborn part. Combustion particles and smoke are smaller still. HEPA-grade media handles all of it — the standard's hardest test point is around 0.3 microns, and both larger and smaller particles are captured more efficiently, which is counter-intuitive and worth understanding. Will a purifier get rid of mold in my house?

No. It captures airborne spores while it runs, which is worth something, but mold grows because a surface is wet and it will keep releasing spores until the moisture source is fixed. Find and fix the damp first; the purifier is a supporting measure, not a solution.
