The Best Air Purifiers for Cigarette Smoke
Two different problems share one word. The certified number solves half of it, and the half it does not solve is the half people buy the machine for.

Buy for two things at once: a high certified smoke CADR for the particles and a documented activated carbon stage for the smell. The Coway Airmega 400 is the best combination of both with a measured zero on ozone. Expect the carbon to need replacing on a schedule, and expect nothing to touch the residue already on the walls.
This page is separate from our general smoke roundup for one reason: wildfire smoke arrives for a week and is mostly particulate, while cigarette smoke is a continuous indoor source that leaves a gas-phase smell and a residue. The certified number that ranks the first problem does not rank the second.
Two problems wearing one word
The particles. Tobacco smoke is one of the three test particles in ANSI/AHAM AC-1, which is a rare piece of luck: the smoke CADR on the box was measured with the exact contaminant you are trying to remove. A machine with 376 certified smoke CADR genuinely removes smoke particulate at that rate in a sealed room.
The gases. The smell is not the particles. It is a mixture of volatile compounds, and no particle filter of any grade removes it. Activated carbon adsorbs a good share of it, and then stops as the carbon loads up. Manufacturers rarely say how much carbon their machine contains or how fast it saturates, and no certification measures either.
The residue. What settles on walls, ceilings, curtains and upholstery keeps re-releasing gases for months. This is the part people expect a purifier to fix, and it is the part it cannot: the machine only ever treats air that reaches it.
How we judged
Certified smoke CADR first, because it is measured on the right particle and is the only comparable number in the category.
Documented activated carbon second. Not “carbon coating” or a carbon-impregnated pre-filter mesh, but a stage the manufacturer describes as activated carbon. Where a manufacturer publishes a replacement interval and price for it, we say so, because carbon is a consumable.
Measured ozone, as always. Smoke households are frequently asthma households, and ozone is a lung irritant. Several machines sold for smoke add an ion stage; we print the measurement.
Sized for a continuous source. A smoker in the room is a source that never stops, so we size these at six air changes an hour rather than AHAM’s general 4.8 — the same target we use for shedding pets.

The honest con: ENERGY STAR declines to classify its filter HEPA or HEPA-Type at all, the filters cost more per year than the electricity, and in a heavy-smoking room Coway’s own “6 to 12 months” interval will land at the short end.

Ion generator — fitted
The two registers disagree: AHAM classifies this model 'Fan Filter with Ion Generator' while ENERGY STAR records it as 'Fan and Filter'. ENERGY STAR's measured ozone figure is 2 ppb. We report both rather than picking the flattering one.
Worth understanding rather than buying for this problem. 435 certified smoke CADR is the highest figure on this site and it will clear visible haze faster than anything here, for $47 a year.
Why it is not a pick: Blueair documents no activated carbon stage for it, so the smell — the reason most people buy for cigarette smoke — is the part it does not address. It also measures 2 ppb with an ion stage the two registers describe differently.
If the smoke is coming from next door
This is the version of the question we see most often from apartment dwellers, and it needs a different answer. Smoke migrating from a neighboring unit arrives through shared walls, plumbing chases, outlet boxes and hallway gaps — continuously, and from a source you cannot touch.
A purifier helps, with two caveats. It only treats the room it is in, so the unit belongs where you sleep rather than where the smell seems strongest. And it works against a continuous inflow, so size it up: at six air changes an hour a 250 square-foot bedroom wants about 200 CFM of certified smoke CADR, which is more than most bedroom machines deliver.
The higher-leverage moves are physical. Sealing outlet and switch boxes on shared walls, weatherstripping the entry door and blocking unused vents cut the inflow rather than treating it afterward. Running a purifier without doing those things is treating a symptom at 24 hours a day — more on the shared-air problem in apartments.
What none of them will do
No portable machine removes third-hand smoke — the residue on walls, ceilings, carpet and upholstery that keeps off-gassing long after the cigarette is out. If you have moved into a smoker’s apartment, cleaning and sealing surfaces is the intervention; the purifier maintains the air afterward.
No portable machine makes indoor smoking safe, either. EPA is unambiguous that there is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure, and a purifier reduces a concentration rather than eliminating an exposure. We would rather say that plainly than sell a machine on a promise it cannot keep.
