This section is for the problem you can see and smell rather than the one that makes you sneeze. It overlaps with pet allergies, but it converts on a completely different promise, and the features that matter are not the same.

Hair is a pre-filter problem, not a HEPA problem. Shed hair and the larger dust it carries never reach the HEPA media in a well-designed machine; they get caught on the mesh or fabric pre-filter at the intake. That is why a washable pre-filter is worth more in a shedding household than almost any other single feature. Without one, hair loads the main filter, airflow drops, the machine gets louder and less effective, and you replace a forty-dollar filter twice as often as the manual says. With one, you pull the mesh out every few weeks, vacuum it, and put it back. It is the highest-leverage maintenance action in this entire category and it costs nothing.

The corollary is that a machine's certified CADR tells you very little about how it will cope with hair specifically. CADR is measured against smoke, dust and pollen under a laboratory protocol; there is no hair test. What we can do is tell you which units publish a washable pre-filter, and be clear that this is a design feature we are reporting rather than a performance claim we have measured.

Dust is an air-movement problem, and where the intake sits matters. Household dust is heavier than allergen protein and settles fast, which is why a purifier on a tabletop pulling air from the top of the room is fighting geometry. It will clean the air it can reach. One design in this section takes the opposite approach and puts its intake vents low on the body, on the theory that settled and settling dust is nearer the floor. We flag that because it is a genuine design difference rather than a marketing angle, and because its certified pollen CADR — the closest proxy the standard offers for larger particles — is its strongest number.

Odor is a carbon-mass problem, and this is where the category is least honest. Removing smell is not filtration in the particulate sense at all; it is adsorption onto activated carbon, and how much odor a machine removes over its service life is largely a function of how much carbon is in it, by weight. A thin carbon-impregnated sheet in a budget unit might hold ten to thirty grams. A machine actually built for odor carries hundreds of grams, sometimes several pounds. The difference is not subtle and it explains the single commonest complaint in this category: that a cheap purifier did nothing whatsoever for the litter box.

Almost nobody publishes carbon weight. That is not an accident. We report it where a manufacturer does publish it and say plainly where they do not, because "has an activated carbon filter" is a specification that means nothing without a mass attached to it — every unit in this category has one, and they are not remotely equivalent.

The litter box is its own problem. It has a fixed location, a predictable schedule, and a dust component from the litter itself that most people never think about. It also responds to placement in a way that whole-room purification does not. There is a dedicated page for it here, because a search for litter-box odor deserves better than a paragraph inside a general roundup — and because no competitor we looked at has one.

What to expect, honestly. An air purifier reduces airborne odor while it runs. It does not remove the source, and if the box needs changing it will still need changing. The EPA's framing is the right one and it is against our commercial interest to repeat it: the most effective way to improve indoor air is to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and ventilate with clean outdoor air, and filtration does not replace that. Common questions

Will an air purifier stop my house smelling of dog?

It will reduce airborne odor while it is running, and a unit with substantial activated carbon will do noticeably more than one with a thin carbon sheet. It will not remove the smell from soft furnishings, carpet or the dog bed, which is where most of a persistent pet smell actually lives. Washing those does more than any purifier, and then the purifier keeps the air from re-loading.

Does a washable pre-filter save money?

Yes, and more than people expect. Hair and coarse dust that reach the HEPA media shorten its life; caught on a mesh you rinse, they cost nothing. In a heavy-shedding household the difference between vacuuming the pre-filter monthly and never touching it can be a full extra HEPA filter per year, which is typically $40 to $60.

Why does my purifier do nothing for the litter box?

Most likely because it has very little activated carbon in it. Odor removal is adsorption onto carbon and scales with carbon mass; a budget unit may carry a carbon-coated sheet weighing tens of grams, while a machine built for odor carries hundreds of grams. Placement matters too — a purifier across the room is treating the smell after it has already spread.
