There is no single best air purifier for a home, because a home is not a room. Here is the one at each size that the certification registers actually back.

The short answer

Buy for your largest room, not for your house. A portable air cleaner is certified for one room with the door shut, and the coverage figure on the box typically runs about 4.8 times the certified one. The Honeywell HPA4300 is the pick for an average living room: 229 certified CFM, 0.00 ppb measured ozone, and the lowest running cost here.

This is the most-searched question in the category and the one most often answered badly, because “for home” invites a single answer and there isn’t one. What there is, is a short method and a certified shortlist at each size.

The mistake this question usually leads to

People search for a home air purifier, see a box advertising 1,700 square feet, and reasonably conclude it will handle the house. It will not. That figure is computed at one air change per hour; the certification computes coverage at 4.8 air changes, and the same machine’s certified room size is roughly a fifth of the advertised one.

The LEVOIT Core 400S is the cleanest example because LEVOIT prints both numbers on the same page: 1,718 square feet advertised, 358 certified. Both are true statements about different things. Only one of them is the room the machine will actually keep clean.

So the useful version of this question is: what is the largest room I want treated, and what is certified for it?

How we picked

Four criteria, applied in this order, every one of them from a public register rather than from us:

  1. Certified CADR against a real room. AHAM’s rule is two-thirds of the floor area at an eight-foot ceiling. Everything below is placed by the room it genuinely covers.
  2. Presence in a certification register. AHAM’s VERIFIDE directory or EPA’s ENERGY STAR database. A model in neither is quoting its own homework.
  3. Measured ozone and ionizer status. EPA advises avoiding portable cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. Where the register publishes a measured figure in parts per billion, we print it.
  4. Certified annual energy use. A purifier only helps while it runs, so this is the number that decides the real cost of ownership — and it varies far more than performance does.

It is in both registers, measures 0.00 ppb ozone, carries no ion generator, and the register records its filter as HEPA rather than HEPA-Type — a classification the popular LEVOIT and Blueair units do not earn. At $34 a year it is also the cheapest thing here to run.

The honest con: Honeywell publishes no noise figure we could source and no washable pre-filter, and the machine has none of the app control or air-quality display its competitors sell on. It is a good filter on an efficient fan and nothing more.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

It is the machine a lot of households end up with, which is why it is here. AHAM certifies it for 153 square feet — a small bedroom, not the living room the packaging implies — at 99 CFM.

Why we would not buy it: 3.5 CFM per watt is the lowest efficiency figure of any unit on this site, so it costs $33 a year to deliver less than half the air of the HPA4300, which costs $34. It also runs a UV-C lamp with no published way to switch it off, and neither register publishes an ozone measurement for it.

Where to put the one you buy

The bedroom, if you are only buying one. It is eight unbroken hours of exposure in a closed room, which is the single largest block of controllable air in the day, and the room is small enough that a mid-size machine is comfortably oversized for it.

Beyond that, EPA’s ordering is worth repeating even though it argues against our commercial interest: the most effective ways to improve indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air, and filtration does not replace either. A purifier is the third step, not the first.

Common questions

What is the best air purifier for a whole house?

No portable unit cleans a whole house, and any page that tells you one does is selling you the advertised coverage figure rather than the certified one. Portable air cleaners are rated for a single room with the door shut. For a genuine whole-home solution you are looking at the HVAC system, not an appliance — and for most households, one correctly sized machine in the room you actually occupy does more than three undersized ones spread thin.

How many air purifiers do I need?

One per room you want treated, sized to that room. Air does not move usefully between rooms with the doors closed, and a purifier cannot pull air from down a hallway. Most people get the best result from one machine in the bedroom, because that is eight uninterrupted hours of exposure, and a second in whichever living space the household actually uses.

What size air purifier do I need for my house?

Size for the largest single room, not the floor area of the house. AHAM asks for a certified smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s square footage at an eight-foot ceiling, so a 300 square-foot living room needs 200 CFM and a 500 square-foot open-plan space needs 334. The size calculator does it with your ceiling height included.

Are expensive air purifiers better?

Not reliably. Across the machines we cover, certified output correlates poorly with price, and certified annual energy use — which decides the long-run cost — spans a factor of nearly seven with no relationship to what a unit sells for. The cheapest machine on this page to run is not the cheapest to buy, and the most expensive to run is not the best performer.
