The Best Air Purifiers for Pet Odor
Odor is not a filtration problem. It is an adsorption problem, and the spec that decides it is one almost nobody publishes.

Odor removal depends on activated carbon mass, not on HEPA grade or CADR. HEPA media captures particles; odor molecules are gases and pass straight through. Choose a unit whose filter set the register records as including real carbon, and expect a shorter carbon interval than HEPA interval.
This is the page where the category is least honest, so it is worth being blunt about the mechanism before we recommend anything.
Odor is a gas, and HEPA does not catch gases
A HEPA filter is a particle filter. It works by physically intercepting solid and liquid particles carried in an airstream. Odor molecules are gas-phase — far smaller than any particle and not stopped by a mechanical barrier at all. They pass through HEPA media as though it were not there, which it effectively is not, for them.
What removes odor is adsorption: gas molecules adhering to the vast internal surface area of activated carbon. That is a consumable process. Every molecule adsorbed occupies a site that is then unavailable, so the total odor a filter can remove over its life is essentially a function of how much carbon is in it, by mass.
The spec that decides it, and why it is hidden
A thin carbon-impregnated sheet in a budget purifier might hold ten to thirty grams of carbon. A machine genuinely built for odor carries hundreds of grams, sometimes several pounds. That is not a small difference and it explains the single most common complaint in this category — that a cheap purifier did nothing whatsoever for the litter box.
Almost no manufacturer publishes carbon weight. That is not an oversight. “Includes an activated carbon filter” is technically true of nearly every machine in the category and tells you nothing, which is precisely its usefulness as a marketing claim.

The unit almost every roundup in this category picks. Certified performance is real, but it ships PlasmaWave and it costs 31% more a year to run than Winix's own AT41 for less air movement.

PlasmaWave — can be switched off
AHAM classifies this model 'Fan Filter with Ion Generator'. Winix documents PlasmaWave as switchable, and the unit runs as a plain HEPA machine with it off.
AHAM records this unit’s filter set as HEPA + Carbon — a distinct carbon stage rather than a coated pre-filter. Combined with the washable pre-filter, that is the specification a smelly, shedding household actually needs.
239 certified smoke CADR across 370 square feet, at $65 a year — the highest running cost of the mid-size machines, and here you are getting something for it.

The only unit here designed around where settled dust actually is — intake vents low on the body rather than on top. Its certified pollen CADR, 274, is its strongest number.

Ion generator — fitted
AHAM classifies this model 'Fan Filter with Ion Generator'.
AHAM records the filter as HEPA Type and Activated Carbon, and the low intake design is unusually well suited to a litter corner or a dog bed, where the odor source sits at floor level.
335 certified square feet at $40 a year. If your odor problem and your dust problem are the same room, this is the efficient answer.

The most-recommended air purifier in this category, and the one with no third-party CADR to check. Coway's own figures are good; at 77 watts it is also the thirstiest machine here for its output.

Bipolar device — fitted
Coway lists a 'Bipolar Device' as the fourth filtration stage. Because this model is in neither register, there is no independent ozone measurement for it — and Coway does not publish one.
Coway lists a dedicated deodorization filter as a separate stage with a published six-month replacement interval, against a yearly interval for the HEPA. That shorter carbon interval is exactly what you would expect from a manufacturer being straight about how adsorption works, and it is more documentation than most of this category offers.
The standing caveats apply: no certification-register listing, 77 watts, and a bipolar ionizing stage with no published ozone measurement.
Winix AT41
Winix · model AT41

The best-evidenced pick for a pet household: the highest certified smoke CADR of any mid-price unit here, no ion generator, and a measured zero on ozone.

No ionizer — filtration only
AHAM classifies this model 'Fan with Filter' — no ion generator, unlike Winix's PlasmaWave line.
AHAM records HEPA plus carbon for this unit too, alongside the highest certified smoke CADR of the mid-size machines and no ion generator. $50 a year.
It ranks below the 5500-2 here only because Winix does not document a washable pre-filter for it, and in a smelly household the pre-filter and the carbon work together — hair caught early is hair not decomposing inside the machine.

Certified for 53 square feet, which is a desk or a walk-in closet and not a bedroom. Worth listing precisely because it is so often bought for rooms six times that size.

Certified for 53 square feet and physically too small to hold meaningful carbon mass. It is frequently bought to sit beside a litter tray, and in that job it is doing very little: too little air movement to clear the room and too little carbon to adsorb much before saturating.
For a litter corner specifically, see the litter box page — placement matters more there than in any other application.
What no purifier will fix
A persistent pet smell lives in soft material: carpet, upholstery, curtains and the animal’s own bedding. Those are continuous emitters, and a purifier is removing odor from the air as fast as the sofa puts it back. The EPA’s framing is the correct one and it argues against our commercial interest: the most effective way to improve indoor air is to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and ventilate with clean outdoor air, and filtration does not replace that.
Wash the dog bed. Then the machine has a fighting chance.
