Above about 450 square feet the choices thin out fast, and running cost separates them more than performance does.

The short answer

For 500 square feet you need at least 334 CFM of certified smoke CADR. The Blueair 211i Max leads on both coverage (674 certified sq ft) and efficiency (9.0 CFM per watt); the LEVOIT Core 600S delivers more raw air at nearly double the electricity.

Large-room purifiers are where the gap between advertised and certified coverage does the most damage, because the rooms are big enough that getting it wrong is obvious. It is also where running cost stops being a rounding error.

$67 a year at 6.1 CFM per watt is mid-pack for efficiency. The numbers are checkable, which the AP-1512HH’s are not.

The Blueair 211i Max delivers more certified air across a larger certified room for $47. A large-room purifier runs constantly by definition, which makes this the worst possible place to accept poor efficiency.

When two machines beat one

Above roughly 600 square feet, or in an L-shaped or multi-zone open plan, two correctly sized machines usually outperform one large one. CADR describes how much clean air a machine produces, not how well that air reaches the far end of a big room — and air movement across a large space is slow. Two units also let both run at quieter settings and give you redundancy when one is having its filter changed.

Common questions

What size air purifier do I need for 500 square feet?

At least 334 CFM of certified smoke CADR under AHAM’s two-thirds rule, at an 8-foot ceiling. Large rooms often have higher ceilings, in which case size up — a 10-foot ceiling in a 500 square-foot room needs about 417 CFM.

Is one big purifier better than two smaller ones?

For a genuinely open space of 600 square feet or more, two machines in different zones usually work better. Air movement across a large room is slow, so a single unit in one corner leaves the far end poorly served even when its CADR is technically sufficient. Two units also give redundancy and let both run quietly.

Do large air purifiers cost a lot to run?

They can, and the spread is enormous. Among the large units here, annual certified energy use runs from 256 kWh to 657 kWh — roughly $47 to $120 a year — for machines with broadly comparable output. Efficiency is not correlated with price in this category.
