The Best Air Purifiers for 1,000 Square Feet

The short version: one machine cannot certifiably do it. The longest-reaching unit we can find stops at about 865 square feet, and the arithmetic for what to do instead is simple.

The short answer

One machine cannot certifiably cover 1,000 square feet. The rule asks for 667 CFM and the highest certified figure we have found is 577. The Coway Airmega ProX is the ceiling — certified for 894 square feet, clearing the stricter two-thirds rule to about 865. Past that, two machines in two zones.

This is a page where the honest answer reduces the sale, so it is worth saying plainly at the top rather than burying it under six product cards. If you have a genuinely open 1,000 square feet, you are buying two machines or you are accepting less than the certified air-change rate.

The arithmetic, in one step

AHAM’s rule is that a machine’s certified smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room’s floor area in square feet, assuming an eight-foot ceiling. For 1,000 square feet that is 667 CFM.

The ProX is certified by ENERGY STAR for 894 square feet, which uses AHAM’s directory factor rather than the two-thirds rule. The two disagree slightly at the margin — the directory is a shade more generous — and we use the stricter of the two throughout this site.

So the ceiling for a single certified machine is somewhere between 865 and 894 square feet depending on which of AHAM’s two formulations you apply. A thousand square feet is past it either way.

What the boxes say at this size

The coverage-claim gap this site documents everywhere gets its most dramatic expression in the very large machines, because the numbers are bigger.

Coway publishes both numbers on its own product pages, to its credit — the 4,253 figure sits next to a 2,126 figure at two air changes per hour. The 4.8x ratio is the difference between one air change an hour and the 4.8 the certification is built on, and it is remarkably consistent across brands.

A buyer who reads “4,253 square feet” and has 1,000 square feet concludes the machine is four times more than they need. The certified figure says it is slightly less than enough.

How we picked

  1. Certified coverage first. At this size nothing else can compensate — a brilliant filter on an undersized fan is still undersized.
  2. Air per watt. A machine this large runs continuously in a space nobody switches it off in, so the Integrated Energy Factor decides the real cost of ownership. At this size it varies by a factor of more than one and a half across otherwise similar units.
  3. Measured ozone. A big machine moves a lot of air past whatever is inside it. Where a register publishes a measured figure, we print it.
  4. A published noise figure and a cleanable pre-filter. Large open floors collect coarse debris, and a machine at the top of its fan range in a room people live in is something you want to know about before buying.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

577 certified smoke CADR across 894 certified square feet — the most coverage of any unit on this site — at 10.2 CFM per watt, which is also the best air-per-watt figure we have recorded anywhere. It manages that on 335 certified kWh a year, or $61, which is less than several machines covering half the room. ENERGY STAR measures 0.00 ppb ozone and classifies it fan and filter, Coway publishes a 23-46 dB(A) range, and the pre-filter is washable.

The honest con: it sits in a premium price bracket well above everything else here, the register records its filter HEPA-Type rather than HEPA, and — the point of this whole page — even this machine does not clear the rule for 1,000 square feet. Buy it for a space up to about 865, not because it is the biggest thing you can find.

443 certified smoke CADR across 687 certified square feet with 0.00 ppb measured ozone, no ion stage, a vacuumable pre-filter and a published filter interval of a year or more. For a large floor that is not quite loft scale, this is the cheapest certified way past 600 square feet.

The honest con: 6.7 CFM per watt is mediocre next to the ProX’s 10.2, so it costs $71 a year against the larger machine’s $61 while covering less room. Its published noise range also tops out at 57.7 dB(A), the loudest high end we print.

674 certified square feet at 9.0 CFM per watt for $47 a year — the lowest running cost of anything covering more than 600 square feet, and second only to the ProX on efficiency. The full record on it.

The honest con: AHAM classifies the Max range “Fan Filter with Ion Generator” while ENERGY STAR records “Fan and Filter” and measures 2 ppb ozone, with no documented way to switch the stage off. Blueair also publishes no noise figure and no filter schedule, both of which the two Coway machines above do.

391 certified smoke CADR across 606 certified square feet with 0.00 ppb measured ozone, no ion stage, and a published 26-55 dB range. If the space is nearer 600 square feet than 900, this is the sensible floor of this page rather than its ceiling.

The honest con: $71 a year at 387 certified kWh, for less room than the Blueair covers on 256. At 6.0 CFM per watt it is the least efficient machine on this page.

Your rate is on your bill and is probably not this one; multiply the kWh figure by your own rate and you have your number.

The two-machine plan, which is the actual answer

For a real 1,000 square feet, stop looking for one machine and place two.

Split the floor into zones and size each one separately. A 1,000 square-foot open plan is usually a living area and a kitchen-dining area, or a living area and a hallway-plus-bedroom run. Measure each zone, apply the two-thirds rule to it, and buy for that. Two machines each certified for 500 square feet is a far better answer than one certified for 894, because the air in the far corner never had to cross the room.

Do not add the CADR figures together. AHAM certifies single units in a controlled chamber and does not certify multi-unit installations. Two 443 CFM machines is not a certified 886 CFM room, and anyone presenting it that way is doing arithmetic the standard does not support.

Two machines are quieter. This is the part people do not expect. One unit covering a space at the limit of its rating runs near the top of its fan range, where the Airmega 450 reaches 57.7 dB(A). Two units each comfortably inside their rating run near the bottom of theirs. The same clean air arrives with less noise, which in a room people actually live in is worth more than a spec-sheet win.

If your space is closer to 500 or 600 square feet than 1,000, the large-room roundup is the better page, and if you are buying one machine for a household rather than one floor, the general home roundup sizes by the room you will actually put it in. Common questions

What size air purifier do I need for 1,000 square feet?

667 CFM of certified smoke CADR, under AHAM’s two-thirds rule at an eight-foot ceiling. The highest certified figure we have found on any portable unit is 577 CFM, so nothing we cover reaches it. That is not a gap in our coverage — it is the size at which the category stops having a single-machine answer.

Can one air purifier cover 1,000 square feet?

Not to the certified rate, no. Manufacturers will happily sell you one: the Airmega ProX is advertised at 4,253 square feet and the Airmega 450 at 3,285. Those are figures computed at one air change per hour. At the 4.8 air changes the certification is built on, the same two machines are rated 894 and 687 square feet.

Is it better to buy one big air purifier or two smaller ones?

For a genuinely open 1,000 square feet, two. Air moves slowly across a large low-ceilinged floor, so a single unit in one corner leaves the far end poorly served even when its CADR looks sufficient on paper. Two machines let you place one in each zone, give you redundancy, and let both run on a lower, quieter speed than one machine working at the top of its range.

Do you add the CADR of two air purifiers together?

Not reliably, and we are not going to pretend the arithmetic is that tidy. AHAM certifies single units in a controlled chamber; it does not certify multi-unit installations, so two 443 CFM machines in one room is not a certified 886 CFM. Treat them as two machines each sized for its own zone — that framing is defensible and the addition is not.

What about a whole-house system instead?

At this size it is a fair question, and it is outside what this site covers. We rank portable room air cleaners because they are the thing AHAM and ENERGY STAR certify and publish comparable figures for. A ducted whole-home filter is a different product class with different measurements, and we would be guessing.
