The Best Air Purifiers for Apartments
Apartments are a per-room problem with a shared-air complication, and the electricity is usually on your meter.

Size per room rather than per apartment: doors block air exchange, so a purifier only cleans the space it is in. For a one-bedroom, one unit in the living area and one in the bedroom, and the bedroom one matters more.
Apartments come with three constraints houses usually do not: less floor space to put a machine in, air arriving from other people’s homes, and an electricity bill you notice.
Sizing an apartment
The rule is the same rule — certified CADR at least two-thirds of the floor area — but applied per enclosed space rather than to the whole unit. A purifier in the living room does very little for a bedroom behind a closed door.
| Space | Typical size | Minimum certified CADR | Suggested unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studio, open plan | 350–450 sq ft | 267 CFM | Winix AT41 (410 sq ft certified) |
| One-bed living area | 200–300 sq ft | 200 CFM | Honeywell HPA4300 (354 sq ft) |
| One-bed bedroom | 120–180 sq ft | 120 CFM | Honeywell HPA4100 (169 sq ft) |
| Small second bedroom | 90–120 sq ft | 80 CFM | Blueair 411i Max (225 sq ft) |

The shared-air problem
Cooking smells, cigarette smoke and cannabis from adjoining units arrive through door gaps, shared ventilation and plumbing chases. A purifier handles what has already arrived — the particulate with HEPA media, the odor with activated carbon, and only if there is real carbon mass in it.
What it cannot do is stop the transfer. Draft excluders on the front door, sealing gaps around pipework, and a well-used extractor fan in the kitchen do more, and that ordering follows EPA’s own guidance that source control and ventilation come before filtration. Why carbon mass decides odor performance.

A small-room unit that clears AHAM's two-thirds rule for a 169 square-foot bedroom on 16 watts. Zero measured ozone, and classified HEPA rather than HEPA-Type.

The argument for a second machine is that closed doors defeat the first one. At 16 watts and $17 a year, a bedroom unit costs less to run than most people expect — two of these together use less electricity than one large inefficient machine.
