The short answer

Under $300 is the first bracket where certified large-room coverage is available without an ion stage. The Core 600S is the most air — 391 CFM across 606 certified square feet at 0.00 ppb. The Blueair 311i Max is the cheapest to run. The Honeywell HPA6000 is the only one here recorded HEPA rather than HEPA-Type.

Price brackets are the least reliable way to rank air purifiers, because the prices move weekly and the certified numbers do not. So this page does it the other way around: every machine below was certified by AHAM or ENERGY STAR, has a live listing, and has recently sold in this bracket. They are ranked on what the registers publish, and the buttons carry today’s figure.

How we judged this bracket

Four criteria, applied before any price was looked at.

Certified CADR, not advertised coverage. Every figure here is from a register. Advertised coverage in this price range routinely runs four to five times the certified room size, because it is computed at one air change an hour rather than the 4.8 the certification uses.

Running cost, because the bracket is about money. A machine that costs $35 a year to run and one that costs $71 are a different proposition three years in, whatever the sticker said.

Measured ozone, stated for every pick. This bracket contains both zero-ozone machines and machines with an ion stage, and the registers do not always agree about which is which.

What the manufacturer publishes. Noise and filter cost decide whether a machine stays switched on and what it costs to keep running, and most of this bracket leaves both blank.

The Coway AP-1512HH is in the table because it is the best-selling machine in this bracket, and in no register. Its figures are the manufacturer’s own, which is why it is not a pick below.

Electricity costs on this page use 18.34¢ per kWh, the U.S. average residential price for June 2026 from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3. Your rate is on your bill and is probably not this one; multiply the kWh figure by your own rate and you have your number.

What the step up from $200 actually buys

The honest answer is coverage and nothing else. Filter grade does not improve with price here: the HPA4300 at the bottom of the cheaper bracket is recorded HEPA, and three of the five machines in this one are recorded HEPA-Type. Measured ozone does not improve either — the zero-ozone machines exist in both brackets, and so do the ion-stage ones.

What the extra hundred dollars buys is square feet. 606 certified against 358 is 69% more room, which is the difference between a bedroom machine and a machine for an open living space. If your room is already inside the cheaper bracket’s coverage, spending more here buys headroom you will pay to run and never use.

What $300 does not buy

Certified coverage past about 600 square feet. The Core 600S tops this bracket at 606 square feet. Past that you are into the Coway Airmega 450 and ProX, which live in higher brackets — what happens when one machine cannot cover the space.

A published filter schedule, mostly. Of the five picks here, LEVOIT publishes a filter price without an interval and the rest publish neither. Filter cost is the half of the running bill this bracket keeps quiet about, and it is the half that compounds.

A washable pre-filter. Not one machine in this bracket documents one, which matters most in a house with a shedding animal — the machines that do document one sit either side of this price range.

Freedom from the ion question. Two of the five best-value machines here carry an ion classification from at least one register. You can buy a measured zero in this bracket, but you have to choose it deliberately.

How to check the bracket yourself

Prices in this category move faster than any editorial schedule, so the useful skill is checking a candidate rather than trusting a list. Three steps, each about a minute. Find the model number on the box — not the marketing name, the alphanumeric code. Search it in the ENERGY STAR or AHAM database and read the certified smoke CADR, the room size and, if ENERGY STAR lists it, the measured ozone. Then apply the two-thirds rule to your own room.

If the model is in neither register, you are buying the manufacturer’s word. That is the single most common outcome in this bracket, and it is why the best-selling machine in it is not a pick on this page.

391 certified smoke CADR is real large-room capability, and it is honest about needing 387 kWh a year to deliver it — the highest electricity bill of any LEVOIT we cover.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

391 certified smoke CADR across 606 certified square feet, in both registers, with 0.00 ppb measured ozone and no ion stage. Nothing else in this bracket moves this much air, and LEVOIT publishes both a noise range and a filter price. The full record on it.

The honest con: $71 a year is the highest electricity bill in this bracket, 6 CFM per watt is mid-table, and the register classifies its filter HEPA-Type despite the 99.97% claim on the filter listing.

The honest con: ENERGY STAR measures 2 ppb rather than zero and AHAM classifies the Max range as carrying an ion generator, with no documented way to switch it off. Blueair publishes no noise figure and no filter schedule.

More certified air movement than the HPA4300 for four more watts, and the same zero on ozone. The sensible step up if your room is nearer 400 square feet.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

257 certified smoke CADR across 398 certified square feet at 7.3 CFM per watt, 0.00 ppb measured, no ion stage — and the only machine in this bracket the register records as HEPA rather than HEPA-Type.

The honest con: it covers less room than the two above for similar money, and Honeywell publishes neither a noise figure nor a filter price we could source.

The honest con: 5.6 CFM per watt is the weakest efficiency figure of the picks here, costing $48 a year, and the “H13 True HEPA” marketing sits on a filter the register classifies HEPA-Type.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

The only machine we cover built around where household dust actually is, with intakes low on the body rather than on top. Its certified pollen CADR of 274 is its strongest number, and it carries documented activated carbon.

The honest con: 216 CFM across only 335 certified square feet is the least coverage here, AHAM classifies it as carrying an ion generator, and ENERGY STAR measures 1 ppb.

The verdict

Common questions

What is the best air purifier under $300?

The LEVOIT Core 600S, if the room justifies it: 391 certified smoke CADR across 606 certified square feet with 0.00 ppb measured ozone is the most certified air available in this bracket. For a mid-size room, the Blueair 311i Max moves less air for far less electricity — but measures 2 ppb rather than zero.

Is it worth spending more than $200 on an air purifier?

Only if the room needs it. The step from the under-$200 bracket to this one buys coverage, not better filtration: the machines here certify 606 and 439 square feet against 354 and 358 below. If your room is under about 350 square feet, the cheaper bracket already covers it.

Do any air purifiers under $300 have zero ozone?

Yes — the LEVOIT Core 600S and the Medify MA-40 both measure 0.00 ppb with no ion stage, and the Honeywell HPA6000 does too while being recorded HEPA rather than HEPA-Type. The Blueair machines in this bracket measure 2 ppb and carry an ion classification AHAM and ENERGY STAR disagree about.

Are prices in this bracket stable?

No. Every machine here has crossed the $300 line in both directions this year, which is why this page ranks on certified performance and running cost rather than on a price we would have to keep rewriting. The buttons show the live Amazon figure; if one has drifted above the bracket when you look, the ranking still holds on the numbers that do not move.
