Where to place an air purifier

The cheapest performance improvement available, and the one nobody reads the manual for.

The short answer

Put it near the source of the problem, with at least a foot of clear space around the intake and outlet, in the room you actually spend time in, with the door closed. Placement costs nothing and is worth more than most upgrades.

Certified CADR is measured in a sealed chamber with the machine standing free. Your room is not that chamber, and placement is how much of the certified figure you actually get.

Clearance first

A purifier needs to draw air in from the room and push it back out into the room. Obstruct either and it starts recirculating its own output — a short loop of already-clean air that leaves the rest of the space untouched. It will look like it is working. Its air quality sensor, if it has one, will agree.

At least 12 inches around intake and outlet, more if the manual specifies it.
Not behind a sofa, under a shelf, or in a cabinet.
Not against a wall if the intake is on the back panel, which on many machines it is.

Near the source beats the middle of the room

Where the problem has a location, put the machine near it. Intercepting contaminant at high concentration, before it disperses, is more efficient than treating the diluted result across a whole room.

The bedroom exception is worth noting: there, the competing consideration is noise, so a few feet away and clear of obstruction beats right beside your pillow. Noise and sleep.

Close the door

A purifier sized for a bedroom is sized for a bedroom. Leave the door open and it is now attempting the bedroom plus the landing plus whatever the landing connects to, which is several times the certified volume. The machine has not got worse; the room has got bigger.

This is the commonest reason a correctly sized purifier underperforms, and the fix is free.

The mistakes worth avoiding

In a corner behind furniture. Recirculation, as above.
Directly in a strong draft. The machine spends its life filtering outdoor air on its way past.
In the hallway to cover the whole house. Air does not distribute that way; you get a very clean hallway.
On thick carpet with a bottom intake. Some designs draw from underneath and the pile blocks them.
Somewhere the pet knocks it over, or that stops a cat using its litter tray. A behavioral problem is worse than the original air-quality one.

Common questions

Should an air purifier be on the floor or a table?

Follow the airflow design. Units that draw from the sides or rear and exhaust upward work well on the floor. Units with a top or upward-facing intake generally do better raised. Either way, keep the intake and outlet clear — that matters far more than height.

How much clearance does an air purifier need?

At least a foot around the intake and outlet, and more if the manual says so. A machine pushed against a wall or wedged behind furniture recirculates its own clean output and reads the room as clean while doing very little for it.

Should I put the purifier near the door or the window?

Near the source, generally — the litter tray, the dog bed, the doorway that smoke comes through. If the problem is outdoor pollen, near the window catches it on entry. Directly in a strong draft is the one placement to avoid, because the machine ends up treating outside air continuously.
