The Best Air Purifiers for Cat Allergies

Fel d 1 is stickier, lighter and more persistent than dog allergen. That pushes the decision toward machines you can afford to leave running.

The short answer

For cat allergies, choose a purifier with certified CADR comfortably above AHAM’s two-thirds rule for the room, so it runs continuously at a low, quiet speed rather than intermittently at maximum. Cat allergen is replenished constantly and includes a fine fraction that stays airborne, so uptime matters more than peak output.

Six of the seven competing roundups we read while researching this site treat cats and dogs as one problem called “pet dander” and recommend the same machine for both. The measurement literature does not support that, and following it leads to a different shortlist.

Why cat allergen changes the decision

The cat allergen that matters is Fel d 1, a protein in saliva and sebaceous secretions that ends up on skin flakes and dries. Custovic and colleagues measured its distribution in British homes and published two findings that are directly useful when buying a machine.

First, airborne Fel d 1 is recovered predominantly on relatively large particles, but a meaningful fraction sits on much smaller ones that remain suspended far longer. Dog allergen, broadly, settles faster. That fine fraction is why a cat room does not “clear” the way a dusty room does after an hour of filtration — there is always a population still in the air, and the cat is still producing more.

Second, they found Fel d 1 in homes with no cat. It travels on clothing. Which is a useful reality check: if you are reacting in places without cats, a purifier at home is treating one part of a wider exposure.

The best-evidenced pick for a pet household: the highest certified smoke CADR of any mid-price unit here, no ion generator, and a measured zero on ozone.

No ionizer — filtration only

AHAM classifies this model 'Fan with Filter' — no ion generator, unlike Winix's PlasmaWave line.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

265 certified smoke CADR against a 167 CFM requirement for a 250 square-foot room is exactly the headroom this section is about — you can run it well below maximum and still be clearing AHAM’s rule. In a cat household that is the whole game.

It is a plain fan-and-filter machine with no ion generator, and ENERGY STAR’s measurement on the identically-rated AT40 records 0.00 ppb ozone. Cat allergy and asthma travel together often enough that this is worth treating as a requirement rather than a preference.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

$34 a year of electricity is what makes continuous operation an easy decision rather than a monthly calculation. At 31 watts it draws less than a typical light bulb, and its filter is classified HEPA rather than HEPA-Type.

Certified for 354 square feet, zero measured ozone, no ionizer. If your cat room is a normal living room, this is the pick that costs least to leave on forever.

AHAM classifies this model 'Fan Filter with Ion Generator'; ENERGY STAR records 'Fan and Filter' with 2 ppb measured ozone.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

439 certified square feet on 29.6 watts is remarkable headroom for the electricity — 8.4 CFM per watt. For a large bedroom or a small living room where you want the machine essentially inaudible on low, this has more spare capacity than anything else at its power draw.

AHAM classifies it as carrying an ion generator while ENERGY STAR records it as fan-and-filter with 2 ppb measured ozone. We report both because they disagree. For a non-asthmatic household 2 ppb is a non-issue; for an asthmatic one, the Honeywell above measures zero.

16 watts, $17 a year, and certified for 169 square feet — which comfortably clears the 100 CFM AHAM asks for in a 150 square-foot bedroom. Zero measured ozone and a HEPA-classified filter.

This is the machine for the room you keep the cat out of. It is small, it is cheap to run, and it is genuinely sized for the space rather than being sold as though it were.

Why this matters if anyone in the house has asthma

Nothing is wrong with this machine. It is ENERGY STAR certified, it measures 0.00 ppb ozone, and it uses 6.6 watts. Its certified room size is 53 square feet.

A 180 square-foot bedroom needs 120 CFM by AHAM’s rule; this unit delivers 34. It is a desk machine, a closet machine, a machine for the space beside a litter tray. It is bought constantly for bedrooms because it is cheap and the listing photograph shows it in one, and in that room it is decoration.

What does more than the purifier

It is against our interest to say so, and the EPA says it plainly: the most effective ways to improve indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air, and filtration does not replace the need to do those things. In a cat household that means the bedroom door stays shut, bedding gets washed hot and often, and soft furnishings the cat sleeps on are treated as reservoirs rather than furniture.

Do that, then add a correctly sized machine that runs all the time, and you have done everything a purifier can contribute.

Common questions

Can an air purifier make me able to live with a cat?

For some people it materially helps; for others it does not, and nobody can tell you in advance which you are. EPA’s summary of the evidence is that studies of portable HEPA cleaners have found improvements in one or more allergy or asthma symptoms without always showing major improvement and without showing improvement in all symptoms. A purifier plus keeping the cat out of the bedroom does more than a purifier alone. This is not medical advice, and an allergist can tell you what you are actually reacting to.

Where should the purifier go in a cat household?

The bedroom, first, because that is where you spend eight unbroken hours and where keeping the cat out is achievable. Second choice is wherever the cat sleeps, since bedding is a reservoir. Not the hallway: a purifier sized for a bedroom is not sized for a bedroom plus everything the door opens onto. More on placement.

Is Fel d 1 really different from dog allergen?

In how it distributes, yes. Custovic and colleagues, sampling real homes, found airborne Fel d 1 concentrated on relatively large particles but with a persistent smaller fraction that stays suspended longer than dog allergen typically does, and they found it in homes with no cat in them — it travels on clothing. Practically, that argues for continuous operation rather than a bigger machine run intermittently.
