Air purifier noise and sleeping through it
The specification that decides whether the machine is still switched on in six months — and the one most manufacturers do not publish.

Only the low-speed figure matters for a bedroom, because that is the setting you will actually use overnight. Published low-speed figures on the machines here run from about 22 to 26 dB. Buying a unit with certified headroom is how you get to stay on low.
Noise is the specification that decides whether a bedroom purifier is a useful appliance or an expensive object in the corner, and it is the one the certification system does not touch at all.
What is published, and what is not
Noise is not part of CADR certification. Neither AHAM nor ENERGY STAR records it, so a dB figure exists only where the manufacturer chose to publish one. Several of the machines we recommend most highly publish nothing.

Reading a dB range
Manufacturers quote a range across fan speeds, and the two ends are doing different jobs. The high figure tells you how loud maximum is, which matters if you will use it during the day. The low figure is the one that decides whether the machine stays on overnight.
Rough anchors: a quiet bedroom sits around 30 dB, a refrigerator hum around 40, normal conversation around 60. Decibels are logarithmic, so 40 dB is not “a bit more” than 30 — it is roughly twice as loud perceptually. That is why the gap between a 22 dB low and a 26 dB low is less trivial than it looks on paper.
The trick that works better than a dB figure
Since noise scales with fan speed, the way to have a quiet purifier is to buy one that does not need to work hard. A machine certified for 350 square feet, running in a 150 square-foot bedroom, spends the night on its lowest setting and still clears AHAM’s 100 CFM threshold with room to spare.
This is why the Honeywell HPA4300 appears on this page despite publishing no noise figure at all. Its 354 certified square feet against a normal bedroom means low speed is enough — and a machine on low is quiet whatever its maximum happens to be.
