Buy one size up from your bedroom’s actual square footage. A machine with certified headroom clears AHAM’s two-thirds rule on a low, quiet fan speed; one sized exactly to the room only clears it at maximum, which is the setting people stop using.
The bedroom is the strongest case for a purifier anywhere in the house — seven or eight unbroken hours in one room — and it is also the room where most purifiers end up unplugged. Both facts come from the same place.
Why you should oversize a bedroom purifier
A machine’s certified CADR is measured at its highest setting. Run it on low and the effective CADR is a fraction of that — often a third or less. So a purifier sized exactly to your bedroom is a purifier that only does its job at the fan speed you cannot sleep next to.
Size up instead. A unit certified for 350 square feet in a 150 square-foot bedroom has enough spare capacity that its low setting still clears AHAM’s 100 CFM threshold. It costs slightly more and it is the difference between a machine you use and a machine you own.
