The Honeywell HPA4300 is the pick, and it is not a compromise: 229 certified CFM across 354 certified square feet at 7.4 CFM per watt, which is the best efficiency figure on this site. The cheapest machine in the bracket, the GermGuardian AC4825, is the one we would avoid.
What a budget actually buys in this category
The useful thing about a price bracket in air purifiers is that it does not correlate with performance nearly as much as buyers expect. Across the machines we cover, certified annual energy use spans a factor of nearly seven and shows no relationship to what a unit sells for. The most expensive machine on this site to run is a mid-priced one.
That means a budget shortlist is not automatically a compromise shortlist. It also means the cheapest unit in the bracket is not automatically the value pick — and on this particular shortlist it is comfortably the worst buy.
How we picked
- Inside the bracket when checked, on the live catalog price rather than a list price or a remembered one.
- Certified by a register. A cheap machine quoting its own CADR is the easiest way to lose this bracket, so presence in AHAM’s directory or the ENERGY STAR database is an entry requirement — with one deliberate exception, flagged on its card.
- Air per watt. At this price the electricity bill is a large fraction of lifetime cost, so efficiency matters more here than anywhere else on the site.
- Measured ozone and ionizer status. Budget machines are where bolted-on ion and UV stages cluster.

The honest con: 5.8 CFM per watt against the Honeywell’s 7.4 for near-identical coverage, so it costs more to run for the same job. It is in ENERGY STAR’s register but not AHAM’s, and its filter is recorded HEPA-Type despite the True HEPA name.

For a small bedroom or a home office this is enough machine: LEVOIT publishes 141 CFM and 219 square feet at 4.8 air changes an hour, on 23 watts, with a published 22-50 dB noise range and no ion generator.
The honest con, and it is the deliberate exception: this model is in neither register, so every figure above is LEVOIT’s own rather than independently verified. We include it because it is the only credible sub-200-square-foot option in the bracket and because LEVOIT publishes a single CADR figure rather than a smoke/dust/pollen triple — but you are trusting the manufacturer here in a way you are not with the two machines above.

AHAM's current record leaves the technology field blank for this model; its 2023 printed directory classified GermGuardian units of this generation as 'Fan, Filter, PCO, and UVC'. The EPA notes that UV lights without adequate lamp coatings may emit ozone, and neither register publishes an ozone measurement for this model.
The cheapest certified machine we cover, and the reason this page is not simply sorted by price. AHAM certifies 99 CFM across 153 square feet.
Why we would not buy it: at 3.5 CFM per watt it is the least efficient unit on this site, which means $33 a year to move less than half the air of the HPA4300’s $34. Over three years the running cost erases the purchase saving entirely. It also runs a UV-C lamp with no documented off switch, and neither register publishes an ozone measurement for it.
The part of the budget nobody prices
Filters are the other half of the cost of a cheap machine and the half that decides whether it stays cheap. A low purchase price on an expensive filter platform is not a bargain, and the interval matters as much as the price — a $40 filter changed twice a year costs more than an $80 filter changed annually.
Where a manufacturer publishes an interval and a price we print both; where they do not, we print “Not published” rather than an estimate, and the absence is itself information. What filters cost over three years reorders more purchase decisions than any other number we publish, and what a purifier costs to run does the electricity half at a named rate.
