Choose on measured ozone first. A nursery is small, so almost any certified machine has enough output — which means the only specification worth optimizing is whether the unit adds anything to the air. Every other roundup on this site ranks on output and treats ozone as a tiebreak. This one inverts that, for a simple reason: the room is small enough that output stops being the constraint, and the occupant is the one person in the house least able to tell you the air is bothering them.
Why ozone comes first here
A large fraction of air cleaners sold include an ion generator, a plasma stage, an electrostatic precipitator or a UV lamp. EPA’s position is direct: avoid portable air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone, because ozone is a lung irritant.
The useful thing is that EPA’s ENERGY STAR register publishes a measured emission in parts per billion for every certified unit, so this is a checkable specification rather than a judgment call. On paper it is close to ideal for this room: 145 certified smoke CADR across 225 certified square feet on 18.7 watts, which is $20 a year — the lowest running cost of anything here, at 8.2 CFM per watt.
Why we would not put it in a nursery: AHAM classifies it “Fan Filter with Ion Generator”, ENERGY STAR measures 2 ppb of ozone, and Blueair does not document the ion stage as switchable. Two parts per billion is a small, legal number. In every other room on this site we would weigh it against the efficiency. In this one we would not.
What to do before buying anything
The machine is the last step, not the first, and none of these cost money.
- Remove the sources you control. No smoking anywhere in the home, and keep strongly scented products out of the room — a purifier with a carbon stage adsorbs some of that, but not producing it is free.
- Ventilate when the outdoor air is good. EPA ranks it alongside source control and above filtration. The exception is a pollen peak or a smoke event, when the outdoor air is the problem.
- Wash bedding hot and often. It is the largest textile reservoir in the room — what actually lives in it goes through the measurements.
- Measure the room. Then size to it rather than to the coverage claim, which typically runs about 4.8 times the certified figure. The size calculator does the arithmetic.
